Cisco Catalyst SmartOperations Solutions Guide

  • Lower TCO by Activating Embedded Switch Tools that Automate Lifecycle Management Operations
  • Cisco Systems

Not all Ethernet switches have been created equal. So sometimes drawing cost comparisons among vendors offering bare-bones products vs. those jam-packed full of features that can lower total cost of ownership (TCO) over time are skewed. That's the point of this Cisco solutions guide, which discusses how to use about a dozen tools embedded in its Catalyst switches to your operational and economic advantage. Collectively, the tools - many with familiar IOS Software names, others new - are called "SmartOperations."

TCO dollars and cents are discussed in the paper; however, perhaps most beneficial is that all the embedded SmartOperations tools and capabilities are listed, described and matched up with their top use cases. It's quite helpful to have all this information in one place.

It's usually challenging to see the "whole picture" of Cisco solutions, which are many and varied. It can be tough to determine where one management function or IOS software feature or other capability leaves off and another begins, for example. I was gratified to see all the Catalyst SmartOperations embedded tools identified, named and briefly described under a common umbrella and given a name. Makes it easier to put the company's numerous capabilities into context.
