News and Analysis: Masergy's Cloud Video Collaboration Service Using WebRTC

Masergy launched a WebRTC-enabled UC earlier this year

What's New?

Masergy Communications, a managed network service provider, announced its Virtual Meeting Room (VMR) cloud video conference service, which is WebRTC enabled. Users do not need prior account registration or app downloads to use the service. VMR is integrated with Masergy's Unified Communications and global private network solutions.  The service allows participants to use multiple devices on the same call and move seamlessly between them without disruption. VMR is currently available for a flat monthly rate of $22.

VMR features also include:

  • Ability to add up to 25 sites, people or locations to a video conference
  • Security provisions to ensure the confidentiality of meetings
  • UC-based presence, instant messaging and content sharing
  • Unlimited usage

Why this is Important

Earlier this year, Masergy launch a WebRTC-enabled Virtual Automated Attendant (VAA) service featuring web-based voice communications for sales and support functions. With the VAA, the end user initiates a call using a "click to call" feature, and the call is then routed from the user's browser to a customer service agent telephone, bypassing the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

Masergy is one of many cloud operators that offer automated attendant and video collaboration services, but only one of a few managed service providers actively offering integrated WebRTC features along with its managed UC and network portfolio: market-leading carriers are noticeably lagging competitive carriers with WebRTC-based features.

Masergy and other competitive providers apparently took note of our 2015 WebRTC State-of-the-Market Report which concluded that video collaboration and customer-facing applications lead the way as the most important services for WebRTC to support
